The Foolish Man Moved the Mountain

Retold by Mavis

In China, there is an old story : ”The foolish man moved the mountains.”

Once upon a time, there was a very small village near by the sea. The villages lived by fishing. There were two huge mountains. When the villagers went out, they climbed the huge mountains. There was a grandfather in the village. One day, the grandfather thought and thought, and then he made an unexpected decision. He called the whole family and had a meeting  :”I have made a decision, I will carry the mountain to the sea.” “What?  You are crazy!”   Every family member thought the grandfather was crazy and foolish, they laughed at him for his foolishness  of attempting the impossible. But the grandfather replied, ”When I die, my sons will carry on; when they die,  there  will be my grandsons, and then their sons and grandsons, and so on to infinity . High as they are, the mountains won’t grow any higher and every bit we dig. they will be that much lower. The day will finally come when they are cleared away.”

The next day, the grandfather carried the soil into the sea, but no one helped him, all the villagers laughed at him. After one month, his sons and grandsons helped him, after two months, many villagers and children joined in the procession.

This things were known about by the gods, and then the gods sent two powerful and strong deities moved the mountains to another place. It was so easy to go out for the villages.

The idiom tells us, ”Do things with dogged  perseverance  and  fear no difficulty. If you work hard  and try your best,  the dreams will come true.
