Information for Students Affected by the ILAC Closure
ILAC ceased operations on September 18, 2026. Here is what we can tell you about claiming the tuition you paid, transferring schools, and where to get help — including the parts we cannot help with.

Study Abroad Canada College is a separate designated learning institution in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. This page exists because students affected by the closure are looking for clear answers, and because we can accept transfer applications. Nothing here is legal or immigration advice.

Languages Canada is coordinating placements, and its Education Completion Assurance Plan aims to place you in a comparable programme at another member school and credit the tuition you already paid toward it. Claims must be filed within 30 business days of the closure date, which for ILAC is September 18, 2026. If you do nothing else today, do this.
Know what the plan does not promise, because Languages Canada says so itself: it is not a guarantee, it cannot promise a place for everyone, you do not choose the school you are assigned to, and where no comparable programme is found the separate assurance fund pays at most 25% of unearned tuition, first come first served, until it is exhausted. Homestay fees and specialised programmes are outside it entirely.

What happened to ILAC?
ILAC (the International Language Academy of Canada) ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy on September 18, 2026, cancelling classes at its Toronto and Vancouver campuses. Reporting at the time put the number of affected language students at about 1,362. Students who were enrolled in ILAC's high school and vocational programmes rather than its language programmes fall outside the Languages Canada plan described above, so the number of people affected is larger than the number the plan covers.
Can I transfer to Study Abroad Canada College?
Yes, but start with Languages Canada, not with us. Under eCAP it is Languages Canada that assigns students to receiving schools, and receiving schools are told not to take direct registrations from students of a closed programme. Registering with us directly first could cost you the tuition credit. Once Languages Canada has your claim, we can take a referral, and we can issue a letter of acceptance to anyone who qualifies and is funding their own studies. Also know that we are in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island — not Toronto or Vancouver — so continuing with us means relocating.
What about the money I already paid ILAC?
Start with Languages Canada rather than with us, and do it now: claims must be filed within 30 business days of the closure date, which for ILAC is September 18, 2026. Languages Canada runs the Education Completion Assurance Plan (eCAP), which aims to place you in a comparable programme at another member school and credit the tuition you already paid toward it. Be clear about its limits, because they are in the plan itself. It is not a guarantee, and Languages Canada does not promise it can place everyone. You do not get to choose the school you are assigned to. If no comparable programme is found, the separate assurance fund pays at most 25% of unearned tuition, first come first served, until the fund runs out. Homestay fees paid to ILAC are not covered, and specialised programmes such as TEFL and TESL training, internships and summer camps are excluded from the plan. Separately, KPMG Inc. is the licensed insolvency trustee handling the bankruptcy. We cannot credit or refund money you paid to another institution.
I was studying at EC English, which also closed. Does this apply to me?
Everything on this page applies the same way. EC English closed its schools on September 14, 2026, days before ILAC, affecting roughly 375 students in Toronto and Vancouver and about 40 more in Montreal. You are welcome to contact us on the same basis.
